The Health Minister, Sussan Ley announced at the end of 2015 that ground breaking therapies for Hepatitis C will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) on March 1st. This means that people with hepatitis C in Australia will have affordable access to treatments which don’t have the debilitating side affects of existing interferon-based treatments. They also have a high cure rate and do not have to be taken for as long periods. This is excellent news for the estimated 230,000 Australians living with hepatitis C. Around 13% of people with HIV also have hepatitis C. Go to the Hepatitis NSW website for more information about these treatments.
