Breaking Down Stigma Barriers in Australia’s HIV Response
Health Equity Matters has released a call to action titled “Understanding the stigma barrier in Australia’s HIV response”. This report shows that stigma, such as unfair attitudes or judgment plays a role in stopping people from getting tested, getting the care they need, or feeling safe to talk about living with HIV.
Even though HIV treatment and testing have improved a lot in Australia, stigma is still a problem. The report says we need to:
- Train health workers to give respectful and culturally safe care
- Update laws to match the science about HIV
- Listen to people with lived experience, and
- Fund more research on stigma.
Removing stigma helps keep people healthy and makes sure no one is left behind. This report is for health workers, community leaders, and anyone working to improve care for people living with HIV.
