UNAIDS 2025 World AIDS Day Report

Hope Shines Through in UNAIDS 2025 World AIDS Day Report

Despite a difficult year marked by funding cuts and global setbacks, UNAIDS’ new report Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response delivers a powerful message:

“Resilience, innovation, and global solidarity can still end AIDS.”

Released ahead of World AIDS Day 2025, the report shows how reduced funding around the world has disrupted prevention programs and community-led services. Domestic funding has not grown fast enough to fill the gaps, leaving low- and middle-income countries most affected. Many organisations run by women and for women were hit hard, with more than 60% needing to reduce or pause important services. UNAIDS warns that without urgent action, these cuts could lead to an extra 3.9 million people acquiring HIV by 2030.

But, there is good news. Global HIV treatment numbers stayed steady in the first half of 2025. African leaders are taking strong steps, with the African Union’s Roadmap to 2030 and Beyond promising ongoing long-term funding for HIV and other health programs. Countries such as Nigeria, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa, and Tanzania are increasing their own local investments. New technologies, such as long-acting HIV prevention injections (Injectable PrEP) show promise in protecting millions.

Hope is also being found in Global partnerships. Support from the Gates Foundation, Unitaid, the Global Fund, and President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) are helping to make medicines more affordable, in some places dropping to as little as $40 a year per person. The Global Fund also secured over $11 billion in new funding, showing global commitment.

With 40.8 million people living with HIV worldwide today, the challenges are real, but so is the progress. The message is clear: The world has come too far to stop now. With continued innovation, investment, and compassion, ending AIDS by 2030 remains within reach.
