Infections halved by 2015: Sign the Melbourne Declaration

Peak HIV organisations presented the Melbourne Declaration to the Victorian Health Minister, Hon David Davis, at the opening of the 2012 Australian Society of HIV Medicine (ASHM) Conference on 17 October.

The Declaration sets out suggested priority action areas for all arms of Government, community-based organisations, research centres and professional organisations in order to meet targets set out in the 2011 United Nation’s Political Declaration on HIV.

The Declaration argues that, if by 2015, Australia is to reduce the HIV infections by 50%, action is required to:

  • Substantially increase access to and uptake of HIV testing
  • Enhance access to and uptake of antiretroviral treatment for HIV
  • Make HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis available
  • Strengthen partnership responses and enabling environments
